Most jewelry pieces are made with individual components. Most of the rings are made up of three basic elements: the ring body (ring itself, like the “band-ring”), the mount (also called “head-ring”) and the gemstone. These basic components are combined with other possible elements, including clips, chains, hinges and locks. There are different types of jewelry making, which are essentially determined by the appearance of jewelry.
The serrated claws
Claw crimping is commonly used for solitaries, as the whole of the stone is particularly visible. There are different sizes and shapes of the claws. The stone can be housed in a cradle surmounted by 2 to 8 claws, but most often the stones are set with 4 claws. As the stone is not surrounded completely, this type of crimping allows maximum shine to the stone.
The rail mount
The rail technique is most often used for alliances. The stones are placed there, sliding them between two parallel grooves having the appearance of small rails. It is a fairly tough crimping but the stones can be loosened and putting them back in place will be costly. This type of crimping is a bit risky for stones, because they are kept at their finest angle.
The micro pave (pavement)
This type of crimping is the most striking. The French word “pavé” describes perfectly the type of assembly: many small stones are held by fine claws close to one another, this gives a flat and harmonious effect to the mount. The micro-pave set is applied to any jewel, but it is used mainly for rings. The paved set is made using tiny metal beads that resemble mini-claws. The paved set technique is used as a special accent for engagement rings. Usually the brilliant-cut diamond is caught in the center of a ring and the other gemstones are paved in the mount of a ring, creating a surface with maximum brilliance – the result is impressive. This is why the micro pave wedding band is so famous.
The manufacture of such jewelry is complex, as each stone must be individually adjusted by hand.
The technique of micro-pave has 2 negative aspects: safety and cleaning. Security is small stones and small metal beads used to hold them in place; there is a risk of loss. Cleaning: paved or micro-paved jewelry gets dirty, even more than jewelry with fewer stones. Regular cleaning of your jewelry set paved, will keep a shine resplendent for a long time.
